Jammu and Kashmir Government has awarded a government degree in women’s studies at the university cantonments of Srikakula, Kishangur and Srinagar.
The award was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.
The award was given to the Jammu Cantonment University in a special cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
It is the first time that a government-level university has awarded degrees in women studies.
The programme, which will be launched in two years, is a response to a demand from the women of the region.
In 2013, the first government-wide programme in the area was organised in Srinagara, a canton where the women had to earn a minimum of Rs.500 a month to earn the entrance fee.
The government was also keen to improve the education system.
